House on Wicker Lane
The Birthday PartyThe House on Wicker Lane is a property belonging to Mitch Hamilton in Maple Falls, introduced through an evening viewing that becomes a clue in the investigation of Charlie Hamilton’s disappearance. The house itself is not described in detail; its importance lies in the timing of Mitch’s visit, his behavior during the showing, and where he went when he left.
The Evening Showing
At eight o’clock on the Saturday Charlie disappeared, Mitch showed Professor Evan Harris and his partner through the house. They had already seen it once, so Harris initially took the hurried tour as a sign that Mitch did not want to repeat the earlier visit. The timing matters: Chase Cooper later asks Mitch what he did after showing Harris the property, making the house a fixed point from which investigators try to reconstruct Mitch’s movements.
What the Visitors Noticed
Harris recalled that Mitch was sweating lightly and seemed unusually eager to sell. His smile did not reach his eyes, and he appeared to be humoring the prospective buyers rather than giving them his full attention. Harris and his partner were put off by the combination of his manner and haste, and wondered whether he was concealing something about the house. Because the day had been hot, the sweating alone was ambiguous; it was the overall impression, including Mitch’s limited time, that made the viewing seem unusual in retrospect.
A Lead in the Investigation
Mitch told the visitors that he had to be somewhere, but did not say where. As Harris and his partner left, they saw him drive in the direction of Glenwood. Harris assumed Mitch had another property showing, an ordinary explanation given his work as a realtor. Chase, however, knew that Kathy and Mitch had attended a couples-therapy session in Glenwood earlier that afternoon. The route therefore sharpened the question of why Mitch returned there that evening, alone. The house’s narrative significance comes from this contrast: what looked to the visitors like a hurried real-estate appointment becomes, in the investigation, a detail that Chase uses to press Mitch about his whereabouts after the tour.
